The Icelandic Canadian Fron is preparing to host its annual Kvennahlaup—known in English as the Women’s Walk—on Saturday, September 20 at Assiniboine Park.
Traditionally held in June, organizers have shifted the event to September in hopes of attracting a wider range of participants. The walk begins at 10 a.m. at the Assiniboine Park Duck Pond, with refreshments served afterward.
Kvennahlaup has deep roots in Iceland, where the first walk took place on June 30, 1990. Originally sponsored by the National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland and the insurance company Sjóvá, the event was created to encourage women of all ages to engage in physical activity. Over the years, it has grown into an international tradition, with communities around the world hosting their own versions of the walk.
In Winnipeg, the Kvennahlaup is more than just a walk—it is a celebration of women, wellness, and community. Participants are encouraged to bring family members and friends, from grandmothers to daughters and even the youngest members of the family, to share in a morning of movement, laughter, and connection.
The event highlights the strength that comes when women come together in support of health, friendship, and community spirit.
Come and walk with us on the 20th. We meet at the Duck Pond at Assiniboine Park at 10:00 am.
